She is the youngest daughter of Severo and Nívea del Valle, wife of Esteban Trueba, and mother of Blanca, Jaime, and Nicolás.

Though she maintains some distance from him, she does allow him to meet their seven-year-old granddaughter Alba and to be a part of her and Blanca’s lives again. Alba is a solitary child who enjoys playing make-believe in the basement of the house and painting the walls of her room.
Clara’s sister, Rosa, is engaged to Esteban Trueba, who has been away for two years working in the northern mines. Esteban is madly in love with Rosa, and he writes her countless letters. Severo’s political ambitions within the Liberal Party soon pay off, and he runs in the Congressional election to represent a province in the south.
Severo and Nívea fear the dog’s death is a bad omen, but the wedding plans progress. Esteban, now a wealthy man, begins construction on a mansion, which soon comes to be known as the big house on the corner, and Clara invites Férula to move in with them. After their honeymoon, when they arrive at the house for the first time, Clara faints when she sees Esteban has made Barrabás made into a rug.

Though she contemplates the pleasures of “getting even” with her torturers, she finally concludes that any revenge would result in yet another generation of violent abuse, torture, and rape. Having returned to her grandfather’s house, the eponymous house of the title, Alba explores the notebooks of her grandmother Clara and turns to her own writing. At the end of the novel, Alba finds herself pregnant with a child that could be Miguel’s but is just as likely to be the product of the rapes she endured as a prisoner. Of all the homes on this list, this is the only one so far that will give you beautiful views of the ocean. It has been called the Taj Mahal of Tile and I absolutely love that the house features locally made tile!

Shortly after this, Clara's sister, Rosa the Beautiful, is killed by poison intended for her father who is running for the Senate. Clara is shocked into muteness after witnessing the autopsy performed on her sister's body.
At first, Blanca gets along with her new husband, but she leaves him when she discovers his participation in sexual fantasies with the servants. Blanca quietly returns to the Trueba household and gives birth to her daughter, Alba. Meanwhile, Jaime and Nicholas both fall in love with a young drug addict named Amanda; Amanda initially loves Nicholas and becomes pregnant with his child. Jaime has to perform an abortion, ruining his relationship with Nicholas.
Alba is revealed to be the narrator of the novel, which she writes while she waits for Miguel and for the birth of her child. When she is older, Alba attends a local college where she meets Miguel, now a grown man, and becomes his lover. Miguel is a revolutionary, and out of love for him, Alba involves herself in student protests against the conservative government. After the victory of the People's Party (a socialist movement), Alba celebrates with Miguel.
Clara passes away after gently explaining to Alba that she has always been in touch with spirits on the other side and will be in contact with the rest of the family. Jean de Satigny, a French nobleman who aspires to go into business with Esteban, sees Blanca and Pedro in a tryst at the river and rats her out to her father. He strikes Clara when she points out his hypocrisy—having himself slept with women not of his own class—after which Clara vows never to speak to him again. The story is narrated by Blanca Trueba, a young woman from a powerful Chilean family. Some of the characters' names are significant, particularly the women's names, which often indicate the personalities of the characters. The names Nívea, Clara, Blanca, and Alba are more or less synonyms, and this is mentioned as a family tradition.

Jaime has always had a strained relationship with his father, especially given Jaime's revolutionary ideals. He becomes friends with the Candidate whilst under the impression that the revolution is to be peaceful. Jaime also becomes good friends with Alba, whom he treats as a sister.

FIDM’s Hope Street Annex facility is located at 800 South Hope Street, Los Angeles. The facility provides studios and lecture classrooms on the ground floor for students of all majors. The Hope Street Studio, located on the fifth floor, houses FIDM’s state-of-the-industry pattern labs, sewing rooms, 3-D Prototyping Lab, Textile Design Print Studio, Pigment Lab, and the Film & TV Costume Design Studio. The merger has created ASU FIDM, which will offer classes in Los Angeles and Phoenix through ASU's Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts — mixing ASU's relatively new fashion program with FIDM's 50-year legacy, which includes its renowned museum and library.

I joined the Design and Arts Corps because I wanted an opportunity to become more involved on campus, and this program has allowed me to do that. The fellowship is focused on creating events for the undergraduate population who study within the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts to enhance their experience at ASU. Being part of the fellowship really helped me to find my love again for event planning, because I used to do that in high school. All of FIDM's fashion-focused programs will move completely under ASU, but the two educational entities will remain separate, officials said, with FIDM continuing to offer business-focused degrees. The permanent collection of the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles is comprised of 850 textiles, including historic quilts, contemporary art quilts, and textile-based art forms, as well as costumes and garments from world cultures. Formed in 1977, the Museum’s collection has gained distinction for its’ unique art and material culture collection both locally and nationally. An indexed library of reference books and related periodicals, available to researchers by appointment, also supports the permanent collection. McCoy Jones Department of Textile Arts contains more than 13,000 textiles and costumes from traditions around the world. A remarkable range of techniques are represented, including loom-woven textiles, non-woven fabrics such as bark cloth, felt and knitting, and objects embellished with beading and embroidery.
